You know it’s all worthwhile when one of your LinkedIn posts has helped someone in their time of need. Yesterday was that day.
After posting about Imposter Syndrome yesterday, I received a call from an ex-colleague I hadn’t spoken to in years. It was such a nice surprise, but what followed was even more meaningful.
They apologised for not keeping in regular contact, something so many of us feel guilty about, but I assured them it was absolutely fine. Life gets busy.
What really stood out was why they decided to reach out. They’d read my post and the line “YOU ARE AMAZING” inspired them to pick up the phone.
They spoke, I listened. I heard them.
They shared that they were going through a rough patch professionally -struggling with their boss, not feeling supported by their employer and doubting their abilities.
They’d been focusing on all the negatives in their life and it had started to cloud their judgement, affecting their confidence.
This is a tough place to be.
We ended up chatting for about an hour. Other work calls were coming in, but this was important.
Like many of us, I’ve been there. Self-doubt can be a dark and isolating place.
I shared some practical advice based on my own experiences:
- Remind yourself of your self-worth.
Reflect on the positives that have brought you to this moment—your achievements, strengths, and unique qualities.
- Recognise that negative thoughts are temporary.
With mindfulness and effort, they can be overcome. This too shall pass.
I suggested they take a moment to write two lists:
1. A list of all the positives in their professional life - their achievements, career milestones, personality traits and strengths. All the good stuff that has got them to this moment.
2. A list of the negatives troubling them.
Then, work on rationalising those negatives and brainstorming ways to mitigate or solve them.
I suggested that they should focus on reminding themselves of their self worth - the secret sauce that makes them amazing!
What are the takeaways from this experience?
Positive mental health is vital. Look out for the warning signs in yourself and those around you.
Never be afraid to reach out for help. There’s no shame in asking for support—it’s one of the bravest things you can do.
Regularly remind yourself of your self-worth. YOU ARE AMAZING. You have everything within you to move forward.
If you’ve been feeling stuck or doubting yourself, know this: You’re not alone.
Take a moment today to reflect on everything you’ve achieved and the challenges you’ve overcome.
You’ve got this.
